Steven "Wigz" Wiegerink

My experiences within the arts are numerous and cover a broad spectrum of areas. Since moving to Gippsland in 2003 I have found myself an active member of the arts community, working with a variety of different arts related groups. I have a strong sense of community, and through theatre have created invaluable links with dancers, musicians, visual artists and writers to create truly authentic community-based productions.

For over three decades I have been passionately involved in the performance arts at a wide range of levels, filling a variety of roles as a performer, winning major awards in the process, while also having very strong and wide spread involvement as a director and producer, in differing contexts from being a secondary and tertiary level student myself, through to working with student actors in a school context, while also being passionately involved in theatre projects at a community level.

Some other aspects….

  • In these theatre projects I have collaborated with renowned local visual artists such as Laurie Collins (metal sculptor), Sally Walk (Ceramic Artist) and Kerrie Warren (Painter) to name a few, while developing my own visual art work as a result.

  • I’ve run holiday programs for the West Gippsland Arts Centre, Warragul Youth Theatre and have been a facilitator for holiday programs run by the Victorian Drama League, complementing my work as a secondary teacher in promoting youth drama.

  • I am a vocalist with Bec Vandyk-Hamilton in local duo group ‘Wigz and Bec’ and have regularly played with bands at a variety of venues and private functions across Gippsland and Melbourne.

  • I have an ongoing collaboration with internationally published poet, my friend Rodney Williams with a view to creating and producing new and locally written plays.

  • I am a theatre reviewer with Gippsland Associated Theatre and travel all over Gippsland, providing constructive feedback to all member companies on the work they produce, towards improvement, nominating aspects of their work for awards.

  • I have previously held the position of the VCE Drama State Auditor for the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority.
